Africa!
Since February is Black History Month, students learned about African culture and made African Art.
1st grade: African Elephants
- learned that African elephants ears are the shape of Africa, dig
waterholes and other mineral sources, and they are the largest land
mammals.
-Created abtract African Elephants.
2nd grade: Massai Women
-studied the women of Kenya, known as the Massai women.
-studied the bright colors and detailed pattern designs.
-learned how to create figure drawings.
- made figure drawings of the Massai women.
3rd grade: African Adrie Textile
- studied the textile from Nigeria.
- learned that these textiles are dyed in indigo blue, created with
geometric shapes and a grid-like pattern, and use a resist technique.
-also adds a motif on top the cloth design.
- using paper, students created their own African textile and used the
resist technique.
-added an African animal motif to their textile and continued pattern
designs to color in the animal.
4th grade: African Masks
- studied tribal masks and animal masks.
- tribal masks are created for celebrations and remembrance
- animal masks respresent the animals in Africa, as well as for certain
tribes.
-using construction paper, students create either an animal mask or a
tribal mask.
5th grade: Safari Animal (realistic drawings)
- studied several types of safari animals.
-students chose a specific animal they wanted to study and learn how to
draw.
-After students were taught how to draw it, students placed it on big
drawing paper, went over it with black glue, and then painted it with
tertriary watercolors.
-tertriary colors: are the colors in between each color on the color wheel,
such as: yellow/orange, red/orange, red/violet, blue/violet, blue/green,
yellow/green.
