Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School is committed to the growth and development of the whole child. We recognize that the middle school years are among the most exciting, unpredictable, emotional, and challenging in a young person's life. It is our mission as a school community to provide a safe, supportive, and stimulating environment where diversity is celebrated, uniqueness is valued, and high academic standards are maintained to ensure success for all students.

Our caring staff is devoted to providing rigorous, relevant, integrative, and exploratory educational experiences to young adolescents. We work each day to live this mission. A dedication to the middle school philosophy is evident in our supportive program. Our 1020 sixth, seventh, and eighth graders are organized into three grade-level academic teams at each level. Our teachers work collaboratively to develop interdisciplinary learning experiences for our students, communicate with students’ families, and support students both academically and emotionally. The team approach allows us to focus on the whole child, connect students with the school, and promote effective strategies to help those students who need additional guidance and academic assistance. 

Student support services are readily available through our guidance counselors, mentoring program, school psychologist, and a registered nurse.  Our students make a difference in the community by completing their required eighth grade community service hours. Students also have opportunities to take-on leadership roles in our active Student Council, which conducts social programs as well as several community outreach programs each year for those in need. 

Our students’ NJASK scores continue to compare favorably with our District Factor Group (schools similar to Summit), and we are proud of our overall results on State assessments. While we are pleased with our students’ achievements on tests, we realize the results measure only a very small part of a child's school experiences.  Nowhere in the test score report is there any reference to the rich educational experiences that a Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School student encounters daily.

We are anxious to continue the task of providing our students with the best middle level education possible as we head towards the future. To that end, we are consistently working to be sure that our students have access to the most cutting edge instructional tools. We are always updating our four computer labs, working to better utilize our state of the art media center, and incorporating mobile laptop computer sets, Smart Boards, and I-Pod Touches into our classroom instruction. Our curriculum remains focused on problem solving, exploring global issues, and emphasizing Twenty-First Century skills.

Currently, almost seventy percent of the students participate in band, orchestra, or chorus. In addition to daily classes in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, students experience a wide range of exploratory subjects such as Computer Technology, Art, Music, Creative Writing, Industrial Technology, Drama, Public Speaking, ProblemSolving, Forensics, and Reading/Study Skills. Our students take one of four World Language offerings; Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, and Latin, one period per day. Vigorous and instructive intramural and interscholastic sports programs are provided, along with an extensive selection of school clubs appealing to a wide range of interests.  Our community and parent organizations are incredibly supportive of our many programs, and are essential partners in providing our students with an excellent education.

From academics to activities and the arts, we believe that Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School is an outstanding place for young adolescents to grow and learn.
