What is the Summit Music Parents Association?

The purpose of Summit Music Parents Association (SMPA) is to support, with funds and volunteers, the band, band front, orchestra and chorus music programs in the Summit public schools.   Our support has resulted in substantial benefits to the music program at both the high school and middle school levels.   For example, SMPA has funded:

  • New performance pianos for the high school and middle school;
  • $2000 in scholarships last year to select high school and middle school students to help finance private music study;
  • $5000 in scholarships last year to graduating high school seniors who had shown leadership and dedication to the music program;
  • Scholarships for students to attend the bi-annual music trips;
  • Program enrichment activities such as master classes and performance experience with professional musicians and singers from Broadway to the Met, travel to adjudications and opportunities to see and hear the finest orchestras in the land;
  • Recording equipment for music training and audition recordings; and a
  • 12-station MIDI system (for use in studying and composing music) that was installed at the high school;
  • A new set of timpani for the high school bands and orchestra.
These expenditures were funded from proceeds raised at the concession stand at home football games and Pledge Day, both of which are staffed or run by music parents.

In addition to the financial benefits, SMPA also:
  • Keeps parents informed by publishing a quarterly newsletter, Quarter Notes, highlighting music activities; and
  • Publicizes to the general community the quality music programs in Summit.
SMPA is very fortunate to have a large and enthusiastic group of volunteer parents (more than 150 last year).  The volunteer opportunities are many and help is always welcome and very important to the continued success of the music programs
