Unified Sports
Summit High School’s Play Unified basketball season opened January 2019, and the community has wholeheartedly embraced its mission. Sponsored by Special Olympics of New Jersey, Unified Sports provide valuable opportunities for students with and without disabilities to train and compete on the same team.
The Unified team promotes teamwork, sportsmanship, school spirit, friendship, respect, and empathy in an inclusive environment which has spread well beyond the basketball court. Pizza lunches organized by coaches and team dinners hosted by parents have provided invaluable opportunities off the court for friendships to flourish and for everyone to feel as if they are part of something great. And, they are. As one of the coaches recently shared, “ This has possibly been the best experience I've had in my entire career.” He’s not alone; Hilltopper fans showed an outpouring of support at every game as they crowded the bleachers to cheer the team on.
This season, the Unified Hilltoppers team played Clark, Millburn, and Voorhees High Schools and participated in the Millburn Unified Tournament on February 24th. Summit played Chatham and Ridge in the tournament.
We look forward to expanding the mission of Play Unified and providing more opportunities, both on the court, on the field, or in the classroom so that all students can realize their potential to be a leader, to be involved, and to be an important member of their school community.
