About Summit
Summit is an established suburban community in Union County with a remarkable diversity of residents, located 25 miles west of New York City along the NJ Transit rail line, and minutes from Newark International Airport and major highways. A thriving downtown features some of the best dining, shopping, and cultural facilities in New Jersey. Summit was voted #2 in the “Top 100 Towns” by New Jersey Monthly magazine (2019) and #2 in Niche’s 2021 "Best Places to Live in Union County".
At the heart of Summit’s fine offerings is the city’s public school system. It was in the year of 1792 that public education started with the Summit Board of Education in Summit, New Jersey. Summit Public Schools has two primary centers (Wilson and Jefferson) that house the pre-school and Kindergarten programs, five elementary schools (Brayton, Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln-Hubbard and Washington), Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School and Summit High School. Summit Public Schools is built on four pillars of success: academics, arts, athletics and community service.
