Multi-Tiered Systems of Support

infographic of MTSS supports

Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) is a framework designed to provide targeted and systematic interventions to support students at varying levels of need. It operates on the premise that all students have diverse learning needs and that a one-size-fits-all approach to education may not be effective for everyone.

In an MTSS model, the language of tiers is used to describe academic or social-emotional student needs and interventions.

Tier 1 represents the universal level of support offered to all students, which includes high-quality instruction and classroom strategies.

For students who require something in addition to the universal supports, either in intervention or enrichment, Tier 2 provides targeted support in small groups. These interventions are designed to address specific skills.

Tier 3 offers intensive and individualized support to meet the unique needs of students.

Understanding and implementing MTSS in the classroom empowers us to meet the diverse needs of our students and ensure their success.

As you think about what supports you will use with students, consider whether or not the concerns are student specific, or maybe the entire class could benefit from supports in that area. There is also the possibility that other teachers are having the same issues or concerns, and if that's the case it may be beneficial to bring this to a school team that is assigned with addressing whole school concerns. Below are resources and recommendations to help elicit some of those conversations.

Resources & Supports

Resource Discretion Statement

Welcome to Summit Public Schools' resource page dedicated to supporting our educators in delivering effective intervention and enrichment services for our students. This page is designed to provide educators with a variety of tools, materials, and strategies to cater to the diverse learning needs of our students. Please take a moment to read our discretion statement regarding the use of these resources.

Resource Utilization at Educator Discretion

The resources listed on this page are made available to educators within Summit Public Schools to enhance the educational experience and promote the academic growth of our students. These resources encompass a wide range of materials, including but not limited to lesson plans, instructional materials, software applications, and reference guides.

Empowering Educators

At Summit Public Schools, we firmly believe that our educators are the best judges of the needs and preferences of their students. As such, we entrust our teachers and instructional staff with the discretion to utilize these resources in ways they see fit to provide appropriate intervention and enrichment services within their classrooms. This discretion allows educators to tailor their teaching methods and materials to the specific learning styles and abilities of their students.

Guiding Principles

While educators have the freedom to choose how to use these resources, we ask that they adhere to the following guiding principles:

  1. Student-Centered Approach: Resources should be selected and adapted with a focus on meeting the individual needs and goals of each student.

  2. Differentiation: Educators should employ resources in a way that differentiates instruction to accommodate varying learning levels and styles.

  3. Alignment with Curriculum: Whenever possible, resources should align with Summit Public Schools' curriculum and educational standards.

  4. Assessment and Evaluation: Educators should regularly assess and evaluate the effectiveness of the resources they employ, making adjustments as needed to optimize student learning outcomes.

  5. Equity and Inclusivity: Resources should be used in a manner that promotes equity and inclusivity, ensuring that all students have access to opportunities for academic growth and enrichment.

Feedback and Collaboration

We encourage educators to collaborate with their colleagues and share their experiences and insights regarding the use of these resources. By working together, we can collectively enhance our ability to provide the best possible education for our students.
