French Classes Experience Bagpipes & Celtic Traditions

Celtic musicians perform for the students.

On Tuesday, November 28, 2017, French classes at Summit High School and at Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School experienced a hands-on learning experience when Bagad New York, a Breton musical group, came to both schools for an exciting concert. The musicians and presenters included Mike MacNintch, John Loiacono, Vincent Janowski and Olivier Balavoine. The group carefully explained the French Celtic traditions from several regions in France, notably Brittany, and proceeded to play several tunes using traditional instruments, including bagpipes and woodwind instruments, such as the bombard. They also invited their Summit audience up to the stage to dance traditional Breton dances while the group played in the background. The group was invited to the Summit schools by Mrs. Brigid Le Minez, French teacher at LCJSMS. Bagad New York were welcomed by Ms. Mary Lockshin and Mrs. Helene Blanton at the high school level in the morning and joined Mrs. Emmanuelle Loriot Apruzzese and Mrs. Brigid Le Minez in the afternoon to perform for their seventh and eighth grade French students at the Middle School. A lunch treat of French crêpes followed their morning concert at the high school, after which they proceeded to the middle school for their second concert of the day. The event at LCJSMS was made possible thanks to a grant from the PTO. The concerts provided a rich cultural experience for students of French at all levels.
