Looking for BOE Mtg Info?

The next BOE Mtg will be held on February 14, 2019 at 7pm in the SHS Library. The meeting will also be broadcast LIVE that evening on Comcast 964 and Verizon 28. Please remember that our Board Agendas are posted on the district website, the Tuesday before every Thursday BOE Mtg.

The Board of Education develops Focus Areas every three years to help guide the Board and Administrators as goals are set for the Summit Public Schools. These Focus Areas are developed along with input from key stakeholders including parents, members of the community, and district staff. A survey was offered to the Summit community between October 5th and October 27th of 2017. The data was analyzed and then highlighted by the Communications Committee Chair, Chris Bonner, at the Focus Areas Discussion Meetings that were held on Nov 15th and Nov 30th. Over 80 individuals in total were in attendance, to share in this important conversation. The proposed Focus Areas were shared at the January 18th BOE Meeting. You can view them here. The new Focus Areas were adopted on April 19th by the full Board.

At the February BOE Meetings there were the following two presentations on the 14th and 16th respectively: Draft 2017-2018 Budget and Board Goals. The March 9th BOE Workshop Meeting highlighted this presentation and at the BOE Regular Meeting, held on March 16th, the Board welcomed our new Director of Secondary Education. On March 28th, at City Hall, the Board of School Estimate adopted and certified the 2017-2018 budget for Summit Public Schools. There were two meetings held in April, on the 6th and the 20th. Principal Ron Poles was honored at the second meeting. The May BOE Workshop Meeting was held on May 4th. The Reorganization/Regular Meeting was held on May 11th where Mr. Richard Hanley was elected Board President and Ms. Debra McCann was elected Board Vice President. At the meeting Ms. Donna Miller was also sworn in as a new member of the Board and Mr. Joseph Cordero was officially approved to be the new Principal of Jefferson Elementary School beginning July 2017. At the June 14th BOE Mtg, presentations honored our 16-17 Retirees, 16-17 Teachers of the Year, and many special organizations, throughout the district, that support our schools. There were the following four presentations at the July 20th meeting: Board Goals (End-of-Year 16-17), Proposed Board Goals for 2017-2018, HIB/EVVRS Data, and Class of 2017 Outcomes Data.

September 14th was an exciting meeting as it was the first LIVE BOE Meeting. Nearly 30 staff were recognized for achieving tenure, as well as four who were honored for their 25 years of service. There were presentations on PARCC Results and SHS AP Data. On October 19th, there was a Facilities Planning Update by EI Associates. At the November 16th meeting, Mr. Louis Pepe explained the 2016-2017 Audit. Additionally, Board Vice President Deb McCann highlighted that the Summit BOE earned a Safety Incentive Program Award. Our final meeting of 2017 was held on December 14th. The SEF presented their Fall 2017 Grants and Superintendent Chang gave a mid-year update on goals.

At the Board of Education Meeting on January 18, 2018, the district recognized 35 Summit High School seniors who received the distinction of being named as scholar students by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Additionally, these students paid tribute to a district staff member who had inspired/influenced them during their Summit educational experience. Afterwards, Mr. Pepe and Superintendent Chang presented an overview of the 2018-2019 budget process. On February 15th, there were the following two presentations: 18-19 Budget Update and SSDS/HIB. There was a subsequent budget presentation on March 12th, which had been rescheduled to that date due to a March nor'easter. On April 9th, there was a brief BOE Mtg followed by a second Board of School Estimate (BOSE) Mtg at City Hall. At that meeting the budget passed unanimously! On April 19th, Michelle Cebula was approved as Assistant Director of Education and Dan Healy was approved as Athletic Director. At the May 10th meeting, Susan Thatch, from the Summit Educational Foundation, delivered a grants presentation. Our June 2018 BOE Meeting was a very exciting one as we honored our Retirees and Teachers of the Year, as well as numerous organizations throughout the community. The Board also welcomed two new staff, Doreen Babis as Director of Special Services, and Pam Southard as Principal of JPC and WPC. There were multiple presentations at the meeting on July 12th. June Chang and Laura Kaplan spoke about SSDS and HIB incidents respectively. Jenn McCann gave the end-of-year report on the 17-18 Board goals. Finally, Laura Kaplan and Amy Herber presented the SHS Class of 2018 Outcome Data. On September 13th, educators were honored who have 25 years of service in the district, as well as those who earned tenure. Jenn McCann and Michelle Cebula presented the Board Goals for the 2018-2019 school year. The Board also welcomed Dr. Donna Gallo as Principal of Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School. At the October 18th meeting the following presentations were given: Universal FDK and PARCC Data. On December 13th, Summit Educational Foundation member Maggie Bauman presented the Fall SEF Grants which totaled $257,351, followed by an Audit presentation by Business Administrator Louis Pepe.

The first BOE Meeting of 2019 was held on January 17th. The Summit High School Chamber Choir and Hilltop String Quintet performed for attendees. SHS National Merit Scholars were recognized at the meeting and they each presented a valued staff member with a special book selection. Following that, June Chang and Louis Pepe presented on the budget process.
