Nomination Form
Attendance
The attendance policy was updated in July 2021. Click here to view the policy in its entirety.
All absences will fall into one of two categories:
-
Cumulative
-
Non-cumulative
Non-Cumulative Absences do NOT count towards a student's absence total. The only absences that are non-cumulative are:
-
Religious observance
-
College Visit (up to 3 days per year for students in grades 11-12)
-
Take Our Children to Work Day
-
Observance of Veterans' Day
-
The closure of a busing district that prevents a student from having transportation to school.
All other absences are Cumulative Absences and count towards a student's absence total.
Cumulative absences are divided into two sub-categories:
-
Verified Absence
-
Unverified Absence
A verified absence occurs when a student is not in school and the school has been notified by a parent/guardian prior to the absence.
An unverified absence occurs when a student is not in school and the school has NOT been notified by a parent/guardian prior to the absence.
Verified and unverified absences accumulate to count toward the possible loss of credit. Unverified absences also count towards truancy and may result in disciplinary action being taken.
If a student accrues 18 cumulative absences in a full year course or 9 cumulative absences in a semester course, the student will lose credit in that course.
Attendance Reporting
Please contact the SHS attendance secretary, at shsattendance@summit.k12.nj.us or 908-273-1494, option 1 to report an absence. Please include the student name, grade, date, and the specific reason for the absence. The attendance secretary or the school nurse will follow up as needed.
